rings stored in jewelry box

A dedicated storage space for your jewelry collection eliminates the need to hunt around for certain pieces. Yet a simple box is often not sufficient enough. Necklaces and bracelets can get tangled, which adds to your time getting ready for work or a special event.

As such, storage for your jewelry collection involves strategic organization to keep your pieces in peak condition and find what you need when you need it. Here’s how you can get started.

Decide Where Jewelry Will Be Stored

Consider storing your jewelry collection in the area where you get dressed every morning and retire for the evening. This may be your bedroom or walk-in closet outfitted with a dresser or vanity.

Along with convenience, you can easily see which pieces match your outfit on a given day, rather than guessing or moving between multiple locations. Once you’ve chosen a spot, think about how you will store your pieces. Common solutions include:

  • A drawer configuration, often with shallow dividers for groups of pieces
  • Pegs or hooks on walls or doors, ideal for collections with longer necklaces
  • Flat surfaces on top of a dresser or vanity, accompanied by drawers or ring holders

Sort Through Your Jewelry Collection

Chances are you have accumulated many pieces of jewelry over the years, from fashion jewelry and family heirlooms to investment pieces. Considering this variety, sort through your existing collection to determine if certain pieces need to be cleaned or repaired, can be donated or are unusable.

Inspect each piece and group them by category. Completely unusable pieces can either be repurposed, sold for cash or tossed into the trash. Next, group your jewelry by quality and occasion. Separate fashion jewelry and work-appropriate pieces from your finer investments and heirlooms.

Organize by Jewelry Type and Occasion

Unless your collection consists almost entirely of one type of jewelry, a mixed storage solution allows for optimal organization. Consider the following:

  • Keep your everyday and fashion jewelry in plain sight, so its easily accessible when you’re getting ready in the morning.
  • Arrange a long rod, multiple S-hooks or pegs for your necklaces.
  • Find a bowl or similarly shallow container to store smaller pieces, including rings, brooches and thinner bracelets.
  • Store your studs and disc earrings in a smaller container for studs and disc earrings. Use a small mesh or pegboard for dangling or hooked pairs that can easily become tangled.
  • Dedicate a temporary spot for taking off your jewelry – the nightstand or bathroom are common spots. Avoid taking pieces off and leaving them around the house or in your purse.
  • Use as much vertical space as you can, so you’re not taking up too much counterspace.
  • For more delicate pieces, look for fabric-lined drawers and compartments.
  • Keep formal, less-worn pieces in a drawer out of sight. Consider a locked jewelry box or a safe to protect and keep your finest pieces from gathering dust.
  • Should a deeper drawer be your only option, keep less-worn pieces toward the bottom and everyday ones closer to the top.
  • If you plan to travel with jewelry, supplement your at-home storage solution with a case featuring internal dividers that can be tucked inside your luggage.
